Arrests of Oromo Opposition members and Students : March/April, August/September and December 2011

More than 500 ethnic Oromos were arrested in March and April in widespread sweeps in the Oromia region and in Addis Ababa. Arrests were reported from towns across the region, including Moyale, Jimma, Harar, Ambo, Waliso, Gimbi and Nekemte. About 300 members of the two largest Oromo political parties – the Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) and Oromo People’s Congress (OPC) were among those arrested and some of them are being accused as the members and supporters of OLF.

Many of them had been members of the national parliament or of the Oromia regional assembly from 2005 to 2010, and had also stood unsuccessfully for re-election in the 2010 general elections. For instance Berhanu Emiru, arrested in April, is a member of the Executive Committee of the OFDM, and a high school physics teacher. Berhanu campaigned in the 2010 elections and authored documents such as statements and media articles for the party. 32 of those arrested, including Asfaw Ngasso, Gutu Mulesa and Mengesha Tolesa, were OPC candidates in the 2010 elections and MPs between 2005 and 2010.

Ethiopian authorities arrested Bekele Gerba, deputy chairman of the opposition Oromo Federal Democratic Movement (OFDM), and Olbana Lelisa, a spokesman for the Oromo People’s Congress (OPC), on August 27, 2011, in Addis Ababa. Journalists told Human Rights Watch that as many as 20 other Oromos who were picked up in Addis Ababa and the Oromia region over the weekend are also being held.
A number of youth and student members of the two parties, including a 17 year old girl who was a supporter of the OFDM, were also arrested in the March and April sweeps.

Oromo parliamentarians council kindly call up on the United Nations, European Union, African Union, and Governments having close political and economic relations with Ethiopia, to take action all of which have made commitments and developed policies including respect for human rights in their aid and political relations, to save the life of the Oromo prisoners.

By Meles Zenaw regime has killed 10th of thousands of innocent Oromo’s and other nations in Ethiopia.

Due to the Zenawis regime act thousands Oromo are suffering in the refugee camps and streets in Europe and all over the world. The TPLF/EPRDF’s campaign of intimidation, harassment and terror has focused on Oromo community leaders, business men and women, ordinary citizens, students, intellectuals and politicians. The regime’s repression has not even spared Oromo parliamentarians, elected legally. The TPLF/EPRDF’s human rights record has been condemned by the European parliament and International Human Rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

To substantiate this generalization we would like to mention only some of the horrible act of Meles Zenawi government:

Ø      Innocent Oromo individuals are being killed in cold blood and denied the honour to get normal burial, some of the dead are left in the forest for hyenas and wild beasts to feast on them. This is what happened in Ciro town in Western Hararge two years ago- the Gara Suufi massacre.

Ø      Oromo students who staged for peace protests against the injustice being committed against their people were beaten severely, denied their graduation certificate, dismissed from school and shot dead in school compound; for no crime committed.

Ø       There are more than 35, 000 Oromo political prisoners in Ethiopia, most of them were tortured, shot dead or disabled forever in the same prisons

Ø      Oromo intellectuals, business men, farmers and civil servants are detained, tortured and humiliated in a way which can be related to systematic eradication of this big nation.

Ø      The most shocking tragedy of this regime is that, elected parliamentarians and members of other political parties were subjected to executions and other acts of inhumane treatment. For instance; Mr Adane was an elected member of the Ethiopian parliament representing the Oromo Peoples Congress Party (OPC). A week after the election of May 2005 Mr Adane was shot dead in Arsi Negele town.

Ø      Recognized Oromo refugees in Somali, Sudan, Djibouti, Somaliland, Puntland Yemen, Kenya, Egypt, Tunisia and Malta were unlawfully deported and eventually faced life sentence or death.

Ø      Interethnic conflicts were subtly encouraged across the country by zenawi regime to obscure and excuse his government’s failure to comprehend political crises that led to socioeconomic stoppage.

Ø      From May 17 to May 19, 2008 the Gumuz militia, from regional state of Benshangul/Gumuz, backed by TPLF regime attacked unarmed Oromo civilians mercilessly by burning down their Houses, indiscriminately killing and amputating elders and children and forcing thousands to flee their homes. According to information we receive, about 400 people are estimated to have been killed out of which about 65 are from Haroo Waataa village of Saasiggaa alone. Only 115 dead bodies were found and buried in just four mass graves. The remaining bodies are either burned by the perpetrators or eaten by dogs and Hyenas. Over 12000 people are believed to have left their homes and are camped in Naqamtee town and at a primary school in Saasiggaa district.

Therefore we kindly request your attention to inhuman situation in Ethiopia against ideals of democracy and universal human rights declarations which the country is signatory to

We firmly believe and tirelessly working to evidence and substantiate with statistics and facts to see Zenawi and his close allies in the government to appear before ICC to answer the case of genocide already initiated by Genocide Watch. We thereby humbly request all the necessary support for the project underway.

Sincerely Yours,

Dr. Getachew Jigi Demekssa
